mobilizes established leaders throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. In
linking these leaders to each other and to national experts and leaders,
we hope the Summit to be a catalyst for translating ideas into actions
that benefit the Hampton Roads community. The Summit is a place for

On Saturday, June 14th, the Democratic Party of Virginia will hold its Statewide Convention. This event happens once every four years - and over 2,000 attendees are expected.
Every major Democratic Official in Virginia will be there - Governor Tim Kaine, Former Governor Mark Warner, Congressman Bobby Scott, Congressman Jim Moran, and Congressman Rick Boucher. Every Democratic Member of the General Assembly will also be in attendance - as well as candidates for Statewide Office
in 2009 - including State Senator Creigh Deeds and Delegate Brian Moran. It will be quite an event! Read More | |
A world traveler who has lived in a variety of communities, Mavel Velasco, Ph.D. (above) understands that making a difference locally can change lives globally. For if everyone focused on that, how could the world not be a better place? Living 20 years in Hampton Roads, the Bolivia native and professor of Latin literature and Spanish at
Virginia Wesleyan College has been a community advocate, particularly for Latino causes. In 2006, Velasco joined with other Hispanic professionals and leaders to form the Hispanic Leadership Forum of Hampton Roads, Inc. The umbrella group aims to help Latino organizations connect within and outside of the community. The group also wants to mobilize

CHARLOTTESVILLE Demographers at the University of Virginia say that one in 10 Virginians is foreign-born. The latest study by U.Va.'s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service notes that new arrivals account for one-fourth of Virginia's population growth since 2000.

People we know usually wish us “Happy Cinco de Mayo” every year. In the past, being originally from Bolivia and the Dominican Republic respectively, we used to reply to these well-wishers by saying “Thank you, but we are not from Mexico.”
